Compared to an incandescent light bulb, an LED lamp consumes less energy for the same light output, generates less heat and is significantly smaller and less susceptible to shocks. Furthermore, it has a much longer life. The increasing use of LEDs is even expanded by applications that would not be possible without potting. The potting compounds used for such applications are polyurethane (PU) or silicone-based two-component solutions. They are intended to protect the LEDs against extreme temperatures, moisture, vibrations and mechanical damage. LEDs are also used in fields where maximum reliability is required and maintenance-free operation plays an important role.

LEDs are used for various applications that range from flashlights and traffic lights to headlamps and taillights in vehicles and to street lighting. They can also be found in lighting systems for damp interiors and swimming pools and are used for creating optical effects in showcases. The potting compound is selected depending on the requested properties such as hardness, vibration resistance and thermal stability. Different colors are possible as well. For translucent LED applications, a transparent or opaque clear potting compound is used.
