First trucks, now cars, trains and aircraft - hydrogen technology is moving more and more into focus when creating the mobility of the future. Hydrogen also brings new challenges. One of them is storage. As a fuel, it has to be stored either highly compressed or liquefied at -253 degrees Celsius. This requests special demands on tanks and containers.
Among others, the tanks are made of fibre-reinforced plastics. These can withstand high pressure and are characterised by their particular stability and resistance. They are manufactured using the filament winding process. This requires precise metering and mixing technology. DOPAG has configured a system for the filament winding process for a leading global automotive supplier. The company produces hydrogen tanks in various sizes for trucks and and utilitiy vehivles for world-renowned automotive manufacturers.
Metering and mixing system eldomix keeps impregnating bath at fill level
Filament winding involves winding cylinders, tubes and containers upt to complicated partgeometries as bicycle-frames. For this purpose the fibrebundles – so called „rovings“ made from carbon or glass fibre, are continuously fed from a rol through an impregnation bath and then wound onto a winding mandrel. This rotates and the rovings are applied with the help of a guidance by an axial movement in the direction of the mandrel axis under precisely defined tension. Due to the axial speed of the guidance and the rotational speed of the mandrel, the application angle is varied and a completely wrapped profile is created. The fibres are first impregnated in an impregnation bath. It is filled with a three-component epoxy resin. This is where DOPAG's eldomix metering and mixing system comes into play. It meters and mixes the two components and keeps the material reservoir at an even level during the winding process. This is ensured by a high flow rate.
The epoxy resin consists of three components with different viscosities and is conveyed via material pressure tanks. Two of them have to be heated. Optionally, an air-conditioned cabinet can be added to maintain a constant temperature, including piston pumps for automatic filling of the tanks. The eldomix dosing and mixing system precisely and constantly doses and mixes the components using own-developed highend gearpumps. The eldomix can reliably process two or three components in this application. Originally, the company started with a two-component epoxy resin and then switched to a three-component resin. The impregnation bath is filled with the epoxy resin in a process-safe way, thus ensuring a consistently high quality of the end product. A constant and reliable production of the hydrogen tanks is possible.
