Dispensing thermally conductive materials
Metering and mixing systems for gap fillers, potting compounds and adhesives
Effective heat dissipation in electronic and electrical components is becoming more and more important. Thermal energy has to be evenly distributed and discharged in a wide range of components, also in order to protect neighbouring components. On top of this, many components are becoming smaller and the space tighter, meaning that heat is distributed over a smaller area. In order for heat to dissipate, thermally conductive materials are used in various areas during production. These include not only gap fillers but also thermally conductive potting compounds and adhesives.
Dispensing thermally conductive gap fillers
Thermally conductive gap fillers have several functions. They continuously cause heat to dissipate and even out irregularities and tolerances or fill gaps in electronic components. Above all, they are used in the production of batteries and are metered between the individual battery modules and the housing to enable the resulting heat to dissipate and prevent the battery from overheating.
Gap fillers are highly filled substances that are highly abrasive as a result. The higher the percentage of fillers, the higher the density, meaning that heat can dissipate even better. That they are highly abrasive means that special metering and mixing technology has to be put into use. DOPAG has refined the vectomix dispensing system for this purpose, and equipped it with a coating to prevent wear. Therefore, proven metering and mixing technology is put into use that is suitable for processing thermally conductive gap fillers because of its higher level of resilience.
Thermally conductive adhesives and potting compounds
Compared to gap fillers or potting compounds, thermally conductive adhesives have an extra feature. They join parts and render a mechanical joint connection redundant, while also cause the resulting heat to dissipate at the same time. Depending on the area of application, the adhesive can also work as a sealant and protect against moisture at the same time. The percentage of fillers is also important in adhesives, because this can have a negative effect on the adhesive properties of the material. Potting compounds can also possess thermally conductive properties if required. Therefore, heat can dissipate to the refrigeration unit and the component can be protected from environmental influences at the same time. Thermally conductive adhesives and potting compounds are used in the production of LEDs, for example.
